Learn To Play Guitar At Home

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

guitaresWhen most people decide to learn the guitar, they see the only natural option as approaching a professional tutor. Of course, if you are looking to pick up the guitar quickly, one on one lessons with a qualified guitar tutor are probably the fastest way to perfect your skills and to progress with your tuition. It’s also probably one of the most expensive, as compared to the various self-teaching methods available for the determined student. With some determination and drive, teaching yourself in your own time at home can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience, and can save you money in the long run, as well as enable you to spend enough time where you need it most in learning the guitar.

To learn to play guitar at home, you need only a guitar book or a connection to the Internet to pickup guitar online lessons. Other than that, you can begin learning the guitar in a couple of hours a week, or a couple of hours a day depending on your schedule. But in order to succeed at learning guitar, practice is vital, and regular access to a guitar is essential. For this reason, most students borrow a guitar from a friend or family, or purchase one of their own. For less than $100, you can find a great beginners guitar, which will allow you to practice whenever possible for quicker results.

guitar stringsStarting to play the guitar at home firstly requires you to learn how to tune the instrument. Initially, buying an electronic tuner with an LCD display will suffice, although for the longer term it will be desirable to learn open tuning. In most guitar books, you will find a guide to basic tuning, although in summary playing each string in the fifth fret should equate to the sound of the open string directly below. If this is not the case, the string directly below must be adjusted at the machine heads until it sounds ‘in tune’. The exception to this rule is the third string, which must sound similarly to the string below when played in the fourth fret. Again, if there is a discrepancy, it is the second string (i.e. the string directly below) that must get adjusted accordingly to ensure it sounds the same note.

After learning how to tune the guitar, learning at home requires you to grasp the basic chords before you can progress to playing songs, and more complicated chord patterns. Initially, working towards playing a song is the best way to motivate improvement, and to work towards learning to play guitar at home. After learning the basic ‘open’ chords, it is perfectly possible to play most songs, thus learning to play the guitar is not necessarily a terribly complex process. However, it is the ability to play by ear, and to change fluently between complex chords that makes a good guitarist. To increase proficiency, it is essential to practice regularly, and to continue to set targets and to progress.

The Guitar Lessons For Children

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

guitar lessons for kidsMusic is a wonderful self-disciplinary exercise for children. If a child shows interest in music and chooses guitar as his course of study, it should first be determined if the child can persist through the sometimes tedious process of learning to play guitar. Bear in mind that there are also various styles of guitar music, i.e., classical, jazz, blues and rock. Within each of these guitar genres, there are also various signature styles influenced by guitarists with a professional following. Many young students choose the genre they are most often exposed to.

Guitar lessons are required. Seek a professional, musically well-rounded, guitar teacher. In the first six to eight weeks of guitar lessons, the student is taught to read music, if he doesn’t already have this ability and to coordinate this with learning to play guitar. These initial guitar lessons give an indication of the student’s desire to learn. Once the student becomes adept in reading music and playing musical notes on an acoustic guitar. These guitars are generally inexpensive for beginners and are often available on a rental basis from the guitar studio.

kids guitar lessonsIn the second phase of guitar lessons, the student learns to “chord”, combining several notes picked simultaneously. This is generally the point at which students gravitate to a specific genre of music. Students learn to play guitar with a “pick”, a small triangular disk with which the strings are “picked”. Or, fingering without a pick. Some guitarists also use a “slide” to enhance the sound of each notes. The slide is a tubular shaped cylinder sometimes made from metal, bone or glass and slipped over the finger and laid across the guitar strings. This method is found most often in blues music or bluegrass. One less common playing technique is to pluck the strings with the thumb. Another is the use the palm of the hand as a “baffle” across the small opening in the center of the front of the guitar. This method has the effect of altering sound volume.

While guitar lessons may be found on the internet, it should be noted that this form of instruction still requires oversight and direction for children, especially in the earliest phases of instruction, depending on the age of the student. Online guitar instruction requires self-motivation. This form of instruction is easier for adults than children. The obvious advantages of receiving guitar instruction from a professional instructor are readily available help whenever difficulties arise in the lessons.

Once a student reaches the advanced phases of guitar lessons, he is encouraged to try performing before an audience or to play guitar with other types of musicians. This affords the student a more well-rounded course of guitar study.

Learn Rhythm Guitar

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

rhythm guitarsRhythm guitar is as specialized as playing guitar solos. If you want to learn rhythm guitar you will need to become expert in a few key areas of guitar playing. Your basic job as a rhythm guitar player is to keep the song moving even if the bass player, lead guitarist and drummer have simultaneous heart attacks.

You will need to be able to play to a beat coming from outside yourself. Most people think that they can play okay without a metronome, but this is almost never true. You won’t have a drummer or bass player to jam with every moment of the day so your metronome will be there to keep you in time. You can buy a metronome but the free ones you can download from the internet will be quite enough to help you to learn rhythm guitar.

The next most available way to keep in time is to play along with some music. You can buy or download free backing tracks or play along with a group with simple rhythmic songs like AC/DC. AC/DC’s Malcolm Young is also a great guitarist to listen to and get pointers from. Another great guitar player with a strong rhythm sense is Johnny Ramone of The Ramones.

A rhythm guitar player needs to know his chords. You start with your basic open chords, move onto bar chords up and down the neck and then get into power chords. Power chords are the least demanding on your fingers and bar chords are the most demanding. Pay equal attention to both.

Power chords only make use of two or three strings which makes them a great friend to the new guitarist who wants to quickly start moving chords up and down the fretboard. Another great thing about power chords is that they can be used in both the minor or major keys. The only thing is you should not be looking for a mellow mood. Power chords are designed to send your audience home with a bad attitude.

If you don’t have a chord book or chord charts, get some from the internet. If you have a reliable internet connection, you don’t have to download them, just make chord folder in your bookmarks.

rhythm guitar riffsThe basic tool of the rhythm guitarist is your collection of strumming patterns. Start by playing alternating up and down strokes. If you are playing in 4/4 time as most modern songs are, you can use down strokes for each beat and the up strokes can play the “and” in between, like:
One (and) Two (and) Three (and) Four.
You could use just one or two chords but it will be more beneficial for your rhythm playing technique if you use a basic twelve bar blues or the chords to a favorite song. The internet will be your friend once again if you want to find more strumming patterns for rhythm guitar.

Once you have some basic chords and you have practiced some up and down strokes, you will be in a position to start copying rhythm patterns from your favorite artists. No need to get too fancy, just try some blues and rock. Listen to the rhythm strumming, see where the down strokes occur.

If you love that chuggy metal sound you are going to have to learn some palm muting. First switch to the bridge pickup on your guitar. The strings are muted by the edge of your hand, just below the pinky. Rest the side of your hand on the strings and try plucking the open sixth string. When you have the sound right, switch to your neck pickup and see what sounds you come up with.

The Guitar Instruction

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

electric guitar instructionThere are far more options for where you can get guitar instruction today than there were 20 years ago when I started playing. Let’s have a quick look at a few of them and point out their pros and cons.

- Guitar lessons from a local teacher

This is a very popular place to start and it’s where I started. A quick thumb through the yellow pages, the local classifieds or a trip to the local music stores can uncover a bunch of local guitar teachers.

The pros to this type of instruction are one on one time with the teacher and the fact that you likely have several teachers to choose from.

The cons are that not all music stores require any sort of schooling for someone to teach out of their store. If a local player is well known and has been playing the local bar scene for a few years, that’s generally all that’s required to get hired at many music shops.

The same applies to teachers that give lessons out of their houses. Not having a music degree isn’t all that important as some of the best guitar teachers I’ve had were self taught.

The other main inconvenience of getting guitar instruction from a local teacher is having to go out in the snow, rain, cold, and traffic at specific times each week to get to the lessons.

- Self guided guitar lessons through guitar magazines

This is more popular than you might think. I spent many years buying every single magazine that I could get my hands on to learn to play guitar.

I learned every song and exercise in them and I don’t really regret it as it was quite a lot of fun and it gave me a very diverse look at different playing styles as the magazines covered every style to try to please all of their readers.

acoustic guitar instructionThe drawback to this is that it’s not a very directed method of guitar instruction. There is not blueprint or guide as to what you should be working on at any given time. That said, it can take a very long time to move to the next level with your guitar playing using this method of learning.

- Online Guitar courses/Guitar home study courses

Using today’s technology, online guitar courses and home study programs gets my vote as the ultimate form of guitar instruction.

Some of the better courses out there can take a guitar player at any level and give them a solid plan to work their way up to whatever level they choose to achieve.

The courses are laid out with examples in audio and video format delivered either online or via CD or DVD and the student can access the lessons any time day or night as well as go back to the same lessons over and over if they need to review what’s been taught.

The downside to this kind of guitar instruction is that there is nobody there to ask questions to should you become stuck at a certain part or need further clarification on something.

The best courses available have solved this problem by including access to a forum where you can pose your questions to instructors or other students.

The method you choose could depend entirely on what level you’re at with your guitar playing. If I had to go back and do it all again, I think I’d choose the online guitar courses/guitar homestudy courses.

I think it’s the fastest, most direct way to get the knowledge you need to become a great guitarist.

How to Play Guitar

Friday, June 19th, 2009

play electric guitarThe title covers a topic so vast it could never be covered in just one article. Many people would love to know how to play guitar properly, and there are so many styles of play, and methods of instruction that it can be difficult to know where to start.

When you decide to take up the guitar, buying the most expensive instrument on the market is certainly not necessary. Whether you chose to begin with an acoustic or electric guitar is really a matter of personal choice, as the basic techniques for both are the same. When learning how to play guitar however a beginner may be best served by purchasing an inexpensive acoustic guitar, saving a larger investment until they are sure this is really the instrument for them.

When deciding what kinds of instruction will be best, to learn how to play guitar is also a matter of individual preference to a great degree. Some people thrive best under the one to one tutelage of an live guitar instructor, but many others find this rather expensive option a little daunting, especially if the instructor is progressing at a pace they are uncomfortable with (whether too fast or too slow)

There is an abundance of books, software and online classes that can be useful when you want to learn how to play guitar. These are often the more economical alternatives for guitarists of all skill levels, and can be just as effective at teaching a pupil how to play guitar as a live instructor. A wise move is to do a little research, read book reviews, download a free trial lesson, or take a free class online. There are a lot of them out there. This will allow you to make an informed decision about which method for learning how to play guitar will work best for you.

The Guitar Plectrums & Guitar Strings

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

plectrum guitarThere is a wealth of guitar accessories available and many manufacturers make the same type of product. Many products come do the same thing but have large differences in price point so this can sometimes be confusing for many new guitarists.

The old saying ‘You get what you pay for’ does ring true in some circumstances but the volume and quality of guitar accessories available are ever becoming harder to distinguish. For example: If you were buying a product made of a solid wood, this would cost much more than a product made of plywood, why? Simply because the raw materials are more expensive.

The guitar accessories I am going to talk about are guitar plectrums and guitar strings.

Guitar Plectrums (Picks) are usually small triangular pieces of plastic that you use to strike the strings of your guitar with. Plectrums have many different thicknesses, materials, and sizes that all factor into the job they do, these variants create a different sound. More thinner and flexible plectrums generally are best suited to playing rhythm guitar, as they pass the strings quickly with less resistance. You’ll also hear a lot more of a flicking sound (a little like a scratch) as they pass over the string that is to some, desirable. This only really happens with the thinnest of plectrums.

guitar picksThe thicker picks can be used more for lead guitar playing, as they produce a good amount of attack. They generally produce a more even sound and you get less flicking sound as they pass the strings. However, the sound you produce will differ, dependant on how hard your plectrum grip is. If you have a rigid grip a thinner plectrum may be beneficial as trying to play fast with a thick plectrum could be tricky.

The plectrums I use are the Dava Control’s. The have a thinner central area that alters how hard the pick is dependant of how close to the tip you hold it. So I suppose you could call it a combination thickness plectrum. Guitar Plectrums only cost a few pence anyway so I would recommend getting a few different ones and try them out to see what you like best.

Guitar Strings come in different gauges, the first question you will be asked when you go into a music shop to buy a replacement set of strings is ‘what gauge do you want?’

String gauge affects the tone and the playability of your guitar. If you have a higher gauge string, there is greater tension. Heavy gauge strings generate a higher volume, however the greater the tension, the more finger pressure is needed to fret the strings properly.

One major benefit of higher tension strings is that they vibrate in a shallower fashion, which allows closer adjustment to the fret board before getting string buzzes. A pretty standard Acoustic guitar string gauge is 12-54, and 9-42 on electric guitars. Altering your string gauge may require adjustment to your guitar in order to maintain the same action (Height between the string and fret board). On the flip side, lower string tension will cause the strings to lie lower which may result in buzzing, but if you already have a high action then you could solve that problem with a new set of strings.

I actually prefer a medium gauge (a set of 10′s) string as it produces a more reliable string bend. The ones I use are the D’addario XL’s 10- 46 (regular light gauge) on my electric guitars and on my acoustic guitars I always use Brass wound D’addario EJ16 Light (Gauge 12-53). Brass strings produce a rich bright tonality that lasts well.

The Acoustic Blues Guitar

acoustic blues guitar tabsWell, it is around the hundred year mark since the world first started noticing blues guitar players. Of course they were all acoustic guitar pickers then because they had very few places to plug their electric guitars in, but they made the best of what they had. Just as a basic first impression, I would say that blues guitar players kind of favor acoustic guitar every bit as much as electric guitar. A glaring example is the success Eric Clapton had with his Unplugged album, but there are plenty of other electric blues players who are on record playing acoustic guitar. Even Jimi Hendrix appeared on TV playing some acoustic blues songs.

Acoustic blues guitar was brought to the world by the likes of by Robert Johnson, Bill Broonzy, and Rev. Gary Davis. Fingerpicking acoustic blues uses your thumb to play the bass notes while the first and second fingers play the melody. Bear in mind that the thumb is responsible for keeping time, so it will take some time getting your fingers to work independently but it will be worth it. Rev. Gary Davis was an acoustic blues player who used his thumb to strum the chords and only his index finger to play the melody.

Lightnin’ Hopkins was another acoustic blues player whose style was out of step with fashion when he was trying to make his way as a guitar player in his youth. So he developed a guitar style that imitated a band playing lead, rhythm and bass. He even provided his own percussion by slapping the body of the guitar.

The secret to playing lots of acoustic blues songs is in learning a basic chord sequence. A one, four, five progression – for example C, F and G or G, C and D usually make an acoustic blues guitar chord sequence. Listening to the music of Mississippi John Hurt is a good way to get started on acoustic blues. His early career as a blues performer was hampered by his guitar and vocals being too subtle and expressive than was fashionable at the time.

You can do a web search for lessons on how to play acoustic blues guitar like the great bluesmen of the past, but as a general introduction to playing acoustic fingerstyle guitar, you cannot go wrong with the guitar technique known as “Travis Picking”. The basis of this style is to use the thumb, first, second and third fingers of the right hand to pick the strings in a predetermined sequence while the left hand plays chords. This is the basic idea of the style, but once you can perform this kind of picking with ease, you will find that you will begin to develop your own musical ideas that allow you to depart from rigidly playing standard chords and the same right hand picking patterns. “Travis Picking” was made popular by Country guitarist Merle Travis and popularized further by Chet Atkins.

So we have covered the names and techniques of great acoustic blues guitar players and found a basic way of playing the guitar that will set you on the road to being a blues guitarist.

A Metal Guitar Lesson

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

heavy metal guitar lessonsMetal guitar is a very popular genre with people who feel that negativity and hopelessness are not getting a fair go in modern music. If you are reading an article called “Metal Guitar Lesson” you probably have an idea about what Metal is but if you don’t, the best way to describe it is by listing some Metal groups.

The genre originated with the loud, in-your-face music of the late sixties and early seventies pioneered by guitar players like Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. This style quickly moved onto another definition of the word “music” where melody fades into the background to give way to the quantity and quality of sound the guitar player is able to produce. Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are early Metal guitar groups. Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Motorhead and Slayer, Sodom, Kreator, Destruction, Children of Bodom, Tankard, Testament and Pantera are also well established but represent the more ruthless Metal guitar music known as Thrash Metal.

Every metal guitar player needs to be a fantastic string bender. The whammy bar on your guitar will change the pitch of your strings but if you have a cheap guitar you might have a problem with strings breaking. It’s best if you do it the non-whammy bar way which is pick a note and move the string sideways to bend the note up.

guitar lessonTo get that chugging effect so desired by heavy metal guitarists, you will need to learn to mute the strings. If you have been listening to Metal guitar, you will have heard the sound, so now follow the description to find a comfortable way of MAKING the sound: simplay hold your pick in the usual playing position and place the pinky side of your hand on the strings to muffle the sound. Now take a few minutes to slowly find a way so you can pick notes on the sixth string while your hand is still muting the sound. As you become more familiar with picking in this position, you will be able to extend your range of palm muting techniques.

Once you have palm muting working for you, you could start to master machine-gun picking. This is lightning-fast up and down strokes with the pick. It takes some practice but you will be glad you did when you start combining this standard metal guitar technique with palm muting.

Vocals are not the strong point of Thrash Metal so let’s get to the equipment you need to become a Thrash Metal guitar player. Distortion is an important part of Metal so a distortion pedal is essential. You will need the usual guitar stuff like plectrums and a tuner and a metronome.

The musical background you need for learning Metal guitar is much the same as for blues players. The major, minor, pentatonic, minor harmonic scales will be handy plus the phrygian, lochrian and byzantine modes. You might want to learn to read music or at least, tab.

Another characteristic of Metal guitar is the use of drop tunings. If you play Metal your guitar should be tuned low. It gives you a totally different kind of control over your strings, your sound is more aggressive and you can do more with hammer-ons and tapping. You could just begin by tuning your guitar half a step down. Not a drastic change but it makes your guitar sound more growly without losing all the high range. Or you could take your strings down a whole step so that your guitar is tuned D G C F A D.

If you take your tuning one and a half steps or two steps down your guitar is now sounding menacing. If you want to tune your guitar any lower than two steps down, a longer than normal neck will stop the strings from moving around too much.

The Guitar Video Lessons

Monday, June 15th, 2009

guitar lessonEverybody has at some time dreamt of learning to play the guitar. For one thing, it has found its way into so many different styles of music that whatever your musical preferences, you can find some guitar music to suit them. There are guitar teachers everywhere so, once you have decided that you want to be a guitar player, you can start learning to play as soon as possible.

There are certain aspects of guitar playing, like chord shapes and how to make them, that are common to all kinds of guitar playing. This means that any guitar teacher, no matter what style he teaches, can show you the basic principles of playing the guitar. Now that the internet has become a source of knowledge in all subject, you will have no trouble finding basic guitar lessons that you can make use of for free.

free guitar lessonsThe differences between the different styles of guitar music are in the chords and scales that are used and also the right hand playing techniques. If you are playing an electric guitar, you can use a plectrum, your fingernails or a thumb pick and finger picks. The thumb- and finger picks are mostly used for Travis picking which is essentially a country music style of playing. You can also employ Travis picking techniques on steel or nylon string acoustic guitars. Steel string guitars tend to be a little hard on the nails so many fingerstyle players use picks. If you are playing a nylon string guitar you can choose whether to use finger picks or just the nails or flesh of your fingertips.

There are different chords, scales and playing techniques used for rock, jazz, country, pop and classical guitar so once you have learnt some basic open chords in the first position on the fretboard, you can start learning techniques specific to the style of music you want to play.

To start off your guitar playing you could type “free guitar lessons” into a search engine and you will find plenty of beginners courses to choose from. Video guitar lessons are by far the easiest to learn from because a person showing you where to put your fingers with you hearing the music as he plays it is a much deeper learning experience than reading words on a page.

So if you focus your search for free guitar lessons on a video archiving site like YouTube, you will be overwhelmed with video guitar lessons for beginners. Once you are past the beginner stage you can start searching again using terns associated with your genre. For instance you could type something like “jazz guitar scales” or “Flamenco guitar chords” or “power chords” into the search box on YouTube.

You can combine free video guitar lessons with other free guitar teaching materials like blank guitar fretboard diagrams, chord charts, guitar tuners and metronomes, all available for free to those willing to search for them.

The Bass Guitar Basics

There are basic bits of equipment that you need to include when you buy your first bass

guitar. The guy in the guitar store is going to want to sell you a boatload of accessories but you only need a few basic things to make up your basic bass guitar kit. Buying your very first bass guitar is an occasion you will remember for the rest of your life. You have finally made the decision to but a musical instrument and to practice until you can play it. Maybe you’ve alr

eady had some experience at playing the guitar. If so, you will find the bass a little easier to play from a technical point of view but learning how to be a bass player does include some c

hallenges. The first is to get out of the guitar store with some money left in your wallet.

Your new bass

guitar is a valuable piece of equipment and you are going to want to keep it safe. So you will need to purchase a bass guitar case. If you are actually going to be transporting your bass guitar to different places for practice or for gigs it is best not to go for one of the cheaper cases. They’re a bit on the thin side. Spend a little more money and get a case that has a hard outer shell and some padding inside.

Bass guitar strings come in several types: roundwound, groundwound and flatwound. The m ost common are r

oundwound which have quite a bright sound and can be used in all styles of bass guitar playing. Reggae or jazz bass guitar players usually prefer a fairly mellow sound so they will often choose flatwound bass strings. Groundwound strings are preferred by bass guitarists who do not like the finger noise that you get with the other two kinds of strings, and they don’t have the extremely bright or totally mellow sound of flats or rounds. Whichever kind of string you use, buy a spare set or two. If you have not made a final decision yet, buy a set of each kind of string to try them out.

Bass guitar players play standing up, so you will need a guitar strap. They are made from vinyl, polyester or leather. Your guitar will probably have one but you might see something in the store that you prefer. There’s not a whole lot of difference between the different types of guitar straps, so just make a persoBass guitar stringsnal choice.

There is one bass guitar basic accessory that you can go crazy over, and it’s picks. Bass guitar picks are cheap and come in many shapes, sizes and colors, a lot like the girls who will be attracted to you when you start playing bass in a band.

A strict rule that all guitar players should impose on themselves is to keep your instrument in tune all the time. You can do it by installing a free tuner on your computer but if you are going to be travelling to gigs then buy one when you purchase your bass guitar. Just get a cheap one to start with. They come in a wide range of prices but they all do the same job.
