The Essential Guitar Equipment

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Guitar EquipmentYou are a new musician, and you want to buy a guitar and equipment, but you don’t know where to start. There are many choices, but with a little guidance you will be well on your way to rock-stardom.

The most important piece of equipment is obviously the guitar. You can either buy an electric guitar, acoustic guitar, or combo. For each type of guitar, there are many companies to choose from. Some include Fender, Gibson, Schecter, Ibanez, Jackson, Martin, Breedlove, B.C. Rich, and Esteban’s line. When buying a guitar, your best choice is to actually go into the store. Trustable stores include Guitar Centers, and your local shops.

If you are going to get an electric, or combo guitar, you will need an amp. Amp sizes range from 10 watts, up to "high-wattage beasts". Prices also range from $60 up to $5,000 sets. For beginner guitarists, the best choice is around a 15 watt practice amp. For the seasoned veteran, choices include 100 watt combo amps, half stacks, full stacks, and much, much morGuitar Equipmente.

The stomp-box is not a necessity, but it is a great addition. Essentially, it is an effects unit with the ability to mix and match sounds. On the low end is the RP50 ($50 now), to pricy professional rack mount systems.

The guitar accessories include picks, cables, tuners, headphones, and guitar cleaner. All of these items are pretty much a necessity when it comes to owning a guitar.

All of this equipment and information will arm you with the correct "weapons" to slay the "beast" that is guitar choices, amps and accessories.

Learning to Finger Pick on the Guitar

Friday, May 29th, 2009

finger pick

The finger picking method of guitar playing is one of the most wonderful styles to tackle for any guitarist. So many genres can be played using this approach, and not just classical, yet the approach is typically the same. The key to learning how to do finger picking on the guitar, is to master the four picking fingers of the picking hand.

Many exercises are needed to strengthen the timing and flexibility of these fingers, so it is in this article that I offer you a bit of advice and knowledge.

The first thing that a developing guitar player should learn is the labeling system for the fingers. The fingers that are used to pluck or pick strings are the thumb, the index finger, ring finger, and the pinkie finger.

Each finger carries a Spanish name, and when the names are abbreviated, we end up with P.I.M.A

P stands for Pulgar, I for Indice, M for Medio, and A for Anular.

Now, regardless of the style of music that you wish to pursue, you must first develop your fingers on some level. Let me provide you with some simple exercise suggestions.

Start with plucking, by taking P (Pulgar) and M (Medio), and pluck the low E string and B string on your guitar. Remember to pluck them together, and keep a good tempo. You don’t even have to form any chords with your fretting hand, unless of course you wish to do so.

After you’ve gotten use to this, try picking out a single note with I (Indice), in between the plucked chords. Keep repeating this.

learn guitarFinger picking is a great way to play the guitar, because it allows you to create several layers at once. Alternating bass lines is a perfect example of this. This occurs when the thumb is alternating between the Low E and A strings using P, while the remaining fingers are keeping a melody.

If you are using chord changes where the root starts on the A string, you can also use alternate picking between the A and D strings.

Rolls are another great way to utilize the finger picking method. These are essentially arpeggios, where you take a chord and play each note separately. The best way to practice this is to work with a 3 or 4 note chord, such as the D chord.

If you do this, you’ll want to use P.I.M.A. like this (ascending) P - I - M - A (descending) M - I - P.

Just like any other way of playing guitar, finger picking is virtually endless when it comes to the quest for new ideas and everlasting knowledge.

If you are completely new to finger picking, try to find some simple finger picking tablature. Even better, if you can, try and find some sheet music that has the fingering listed above each note or chord.

This will get you started, and then from here on out, once you get used to using the fingers in a certain way, you’ll pretty much be able to figure out the picking hand fingering for any song, even if the use of fingers is not denoted in the tablature or notation.

beginner guitarIf you have your mind set on learning guitar and you are looking for a guitar beginner book, then let me introduce you to this really cool course that I stumbled upon.

There are a lot of really good guitar beginner books out there, and I’m sure that they work pretty well for some people but not for the majority. You see, not everyone can focus and sit through pages and pages of information because not everyone uses the same learning ability (we use all three, but we develop one more than the other). Some are visual learners, some are auditory learners, and other kinesthetic learners. . Now, is there a method that appeals to all these learning styles? Yes there is! It comes in an interactive course loaded with easy to use features.

Advantages of an Interactive guitar course
Now, a guitar beginner book is good but it’s greater when it comes with audio and video. With this method all of your learning abilities will be appealed and you will be soaking in every lesson really fast. This course has been put together by Ben Edwards, a professional musician and instructor. Ben began his guitar teaching career doing private tutoring. In 2002 he completed a teaching degree from the University of Canterbury. After graduating Ben began work on what would become the well known and popular "Jamorama" online guitar course. Ben understands the importance and advantages of training beginners trough all the learning styles, thats wguitar dvd'shy Jamorama is more than a simple guitar beginner book.

Ben’s Jamorama course comes in books, DVD’s or instant downloadable software (my personal favorite). It’s designed to take you from zero or little guitar skills all the way to an advanced guitar player. The features are great; it’s like having Ben personally teaching you his techniques and methods.

How to Improvise on Guitar Chords

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

How To Improvise On Guitar Chords

guitar song chordsAs you learn the guitar chords, you will learn that every guitar chord can be done in a number of fret positions. Usually, the selection of the fret position to use depends on whichever the guitarist feels comfortable doing. Sometimes, there are guitar chords that have complicated and hard-to-do-for-beginners fret positions. In a tablature, such chords may follow another chord that requires fret positions that are either easy or difficult to follow. Omitting such a chord when playing a song would be unthinkable for it will alter the overall effect of the music or the song. This leaves to the simplest most effective solutions to guitar chord difficulties- improvisation.

Improvising on hard-to-do chords is nothing new among guitar learners. Even professional guitarists, at some point, have done some in doing musical pieces or accompanying a song. On a traditional guitar lesson, students are presented with guitar chords that correspond to a number of fret positions. Sometimes, for a novice player, none of those positions would work. In this light, he may be taught with an improvised chord that produced similar sound as to those produced when doing the recommended fret position of a guitar chord. Usually, improvised fret positions are easier and simpler for a beginner to do.

Usually, the improvised fret positions to some challenging guitar chords are not printed in a traditional guitar chord book. They are usually given by the instructor or a professional guitarist, one who knows too well how to play the guitar and how to produce similar tunes with simpler and easy-to-follow fret positions. In some cases, improvisation works similar to the cheat codes of challenging video games; it makes you play better.

bass guitar chordsAs you learn to improvise with guitar chords, it is important to have your guitar properly tuned. If you already understand the meaning and use of scales, guitar chords and notes, then you can get a head start. A chord may be a minor or major. To improvise a root chord, simply play the root chord scale or the same thing that is similar on the fret of that chord. For practice, play any of the succeeding noted on the scale in any order. As you learn playing the chord and the root chord such as its 4th or 5th note of the chord in the scale, practice by playing your newly acquired chord improvisation by playing it in random order with the succeeding notes in the scale.

You must understand that doing improvisation on guitar chords is similar to a video game cheat code. Eventually, you will have to learn doing the real thing to be a better guitarist. When you regularly play the guitar, either during lessons or self-practice, you establish flexibility and memory on your finger muscles. Little by little, you can make yourself do those difficult chords with enough practice. Improvised guitar chords may work for now but the good news is that it is possible that you will do no more improvisation in the future.

Studying Heavy Metal Guitar

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

heavy metal guitarI have always talked about how universal music is, and when it comes to metal, it can be as universal as you want it to be. A lot of people shrug and don’t think that it is, but they are quite wrong.

A good place to start would be to study a little bit of the approach to rock guitar. Metal, like rock, uses a lot of power chords and a lot of the same scales and modes, but because metal is more adaptable to different genres of music, it can include any number of modes or chord structures.

This article has to be vague because there are so many different forms that heavy metal comes in. You have speed metal, thrash metal, black metal, alt metal, death metal, neo-classical metal, Black metal, Power metal, Goth metal, Jazz metal, and even Polka metal. In all reality that list is very tiny, as new forms of the musical movement are constantly being recognized.

Still, all of these forms of metal have a similar core foundation, and its just ahead that we’re going to talk about this foundation.

1. Rhythm Guitar

In a lot of metal songs, a common theme is to ride one string and insert chords where desired. By riding a string, I mean to pick that string multiple times while inserting chords (typically power chords) at different times throughout a riff. A lot of rhythm guitarists try to do this with down strokes, but I highly advise you to correct this and start using alternate picking. This will allow you to produce some intense and fast rhythms. It is also quite common to palm mute the string that a guitarist is riding. When I say palm mute, I mean to literally rest the palm of your picking hand on the string, muffling the string to get a good crunch. The palm is generally laid close to the bridge of the guitar.

2. Stops and rhythm accents

With the above approach to playing rhythm guitar in heavy metal, a lot of complicated rhythm structures are often created. It is common for a metal guitarist to insert a lot of stops in their rhythm structure. The rhythms are typically always changing, creating elaborate and interesting riffs. I always think of the rhythm guitar in a metal song as being very percussive. If you take the time to familiarize yourself with what a drummer is doing in a metal band, then this will make better sense to you.

3. Metronome

That’s right - use a metronome. If you are just starting out, you’d be wise to practice metal rhythms with a metronome. The rhythm has to be tight, because metal is actually a very sophisticated for of music. Often times the drummer is playing very fast, and is usually using the double bass pedal on a drum set. These guys can really lay it on the bass drum, so you need to be able to keep up with it.

When I was a kid I got involved in a metal band that was way out of my league. As a lead guitarist, I naturally spend more time working on fast solos, and not rhythms. I tried to play these complicated rhythms, while trying to keep up with our drummer, who was a bit of a legend in the area. It stressed my picking hand out so much that it took me about three months of TLC to repair it and bring it back to its old self.

I would suggest sitting down with a metronome and working on riding the low E string, or A string, in sixteenths. This will get your picking hand loosened up and give it some added strength. Practice doing this will palm muting and without palm muting, but start at a very, very slow tempo.

4. Scales and Modes

I personally have always thought that when it comes to modes in heavy metal, everything is fair game. The Major scale, Major Pentatonic, Minor Pentatonic, Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor, Phrygian, and the Exotic Scales are excellent for guitar leads in metal. Lead guitarists who play metal tend to be quite the achievers, so you should probably take the time to learn every scale and mode available.

5. Technique

Heavy metal guitar also boasts its fair share of techniques. Not only that, but it actually dominates these techniques. Here’s a small list.

a) alternate picking

b) string skipping

c) tapping

d) legato

e) sweep picking

f) economy picking

There are also many more, not so common hybrid techniques, like sweep legato, or string skip tapping.

6. Classical Music

Classical music is a huge influence for the world of metal. It is very important to listen to classical music, and study its nature. For instance, Counterpoint is a Baroque approach to playing two melodies that has resurfaced in the metal community in recent years. It would also appear that a lot of predominant metal

guitarists are quite fond of J.S. Bach, and this certainly does not exclude the ever famous Yngwie Malmsteen.

Conclusion

Metal is one of the most ambitious styles of music out their. There is a lot to learn, but start small and know that you will eventually have finished climbing the mountain. This is also inspiring, because if you reach the top of that mountain and decide to study a new genre of music, you’ll be very much prepared. Alex Skolnick who was the former lead guitarist for Testament did just this, and mostly plays Jazz guitar now. You can be assured that he makes an amazing Jazz guitarist. Keep rockin’!

The Guitar Sheet Music

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

classical guitar sheet musicAs you take guitar lessons either on your own or with a help of a professional guitar player, you are most likely to encounter guitar sheet music. Guitar sheet music is a printed musical notation for guitar. If you are serious in learning how to play a guitar like a pro, you have to learn what guitar sheet music is, what it does and how it is used as early as now.

There are basically two types of musical notations for guitar: standard notation and tablature. These notations tell you which notes to play on your guitar.

Standard Notation

In this kind of notation, the notes are written in a five-line musical staff. You must be able to identify the notes in the staff and locate the equivalent note on your guitar. Each kind of note has its own duration for instance, a quarter note lasts one beat; a half note, two beats; and a whole note, four beats.

Mnemonics are usually used to identify and remember the notes in the staff easily. Notes that are found in the spaces between the lines form the word FACE while the notes found in the lines form EGBDF, which can be easily recalled by the mnemonic ‘Every Good Boy Does Fine.’

The note located at the ledger line below the staff is called the middle C. On the guitar, the middle C lies on the fifth string.

Tablature

guitarsThis kind of guitar notation tells you exactly where to position your fingers on the guitar. It consists of six horizontal lines that represent the six strings of the instrument. If you look at the staff closely, you will see numbers on the lines. Each of these corresponds to a fret in the guitar.

Since a guitar tablature or a tab shows a clear-cut illustration of the fretboard, it is much easier to use. Also, a guitar tab avoids confusion since notes in a standard notation can be played in different strings and frets.

However, a tab may only be used for guitars while a standard notation is applicable to many kinds of instruments. Moreover, you cannot identify the rhythm of the song if you are using only a tablature. For better appreciation of the music, it would be better to get a guitar sheet music with both standard and tablature notations.
